Make energy efficiency a priority.
By researching and understanding options, you can make smart decisions on the glass, frame, and sash of your windows. An efficient window not only save heating and cooling bills, but it also improves occupant comfort by keeping your house warmer in winter and cooler in summer
Research warranties and service policies.
Some warranties state “repair or replacement of defective parts at the factory, on site service is charged for at prevailing rates.” Be sure of the long-term security you have in your investment. Check the long form warranty not just the glossy 8 x 10 sales warranty. That is where you really see the cost of warranty. I have found lumberyards and dealers who did not know the factory would charge for warranty service. It is common for Sealed unit warranties to charge the homeowner for Sealed unit crating, shipping and installation of the warranted product. The SU manufacturer provides only the manufactured SU to the original point of purchase to their client (the fabricator) at no charge, all other expenses are very often passed on to the end user unless otherwise stated. A strong product warranty and service policy can save you a lot of money. Carefully review the warranties for replacement stipulations, ownership transfer details, and guarantees against failure of the glass, frame and sash of the window, and ask if the warranty is a pro-rated depreciating warranty and for how long or is warranty labour also covered and for what distance.
Beware of “bargain” windows.
There are many manufacturers producing inexpensive poor quality windows distributed through lumberyard and exterior renovation companies. These products are typically created to cater to the North-American-wide building community and not specifically the homeowner for Saskatchewan’s climate. Vinyl windows are designed by companies whose business is to sell vinyl, not by the companies who fabricate the windows. Look very carefully at the design. Have they been designed for the end-user or have they been designed to make the fabricator’s job easier. Steer away from organizations that seem to constantly change extruders or fabricator suppliers. When you need help they probably won’t be dealing with the same supplier. Always research the company, their reputation, and the exact details of warranty information. Make sure that their policies are in writing not just verbal.
Plan for your future needs.
People of all ages benefit from making their homes more accessible and easier to maintain. Consider easy-to-turn hand cranks and low-placed latches to make your windows easier to operate.
Research your options with a specialist.
Do your homework. Learn as much as you can about the options available. If you’re having surgery performed to your home make sure it is done by a surgeon that will give the best job and advice, not just a General Practitioner who may be working with some knowledge but not enough to give you the best advice. You wouldn’t take your car to a lawn mower mechanic even though they have good knowledge of gas engines!
Proper installation is critical.
Ask for a complete list of customers in your area not just a cherry picked list. Phone them for a referral. Ask the window dealer if you can view window installations in your neighbourhood.
